The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library is holding "Celebrating America's Musical Diversity," a series of musical programs which were partially funded by a Nassau Grant for the Arts administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. On Thursday, March 8, 2007, the Aloha Iohani Dance Troupe performed Traditional Hawaiian Hula Dance & Steel Guitar Music and taught the children in the audience how to hula. The children had a great time wearing grass skirts and learning the hula.

Kailani, which means waters from heaven in Hawaiian, is made up of Olivia Iolani and Chris Merwin. They perform traditional Hawaiian hula dance and steel guitar music for children and adults of all ages. Their mission is to introduce audiences to authentic Hawaiian culture through dance and music. One thing that sets them apart from other hula Olivia Iolani is the lead dancer of the Aloha Iolani Dance Troupe. The troupe was featured in New York Newsday and ABC TV and performs in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk libraries, museums, senior centers and children's organizations. Olivia Iolani is also the director of Dancealoha, a New York based company that specializes in Hawaiian theme and Polynesian theme Luau party dance entertainment for children and seniors.

Drawing music lovers from near and far, last year’s festival attracted over 1,500 fans. Acclaimed duo Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman will headline the annual family festival this year. (snip) Kicking off the 20th Fiddle & Folk Festival is Kailani (“waters from heaven” in Hawaiian)— Olivia Iolani and Chris Merwin—performing traditional Hawaiian hula dance and steel guitar music. Olivia has been dancing the hula since the age of five. She is the lead dancer of Aloha Iolani dance troupe, and has performed and taught at spas and resorts all over the U.S. including Canyon Ranch, Gold Door and the Kaiulani Hotel in Honolulu.

The public is invited to the event featuring the Aloha Iolani Hawaiian Dance Troupe and Japanese drumming group Ryu Shu Taiko. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID. Founded by Olivia Iolani Meyers, the South Huntington, NY-based Aloha Iolani Hawaiian Dance Troupe has performed at numerous venues on Long Island and at resorts and spas throughout the U.S. The dance troupe will perform Polynesian dancing from Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, and the Philippines. In 1998, Gerard Senese founded Ryu Shu Taiko, which is based in the karate studio of Ryu Shu Kan in Farmingville, NY. Ryu Shu Taiko is composed of children and adult karate students who have made their own taiko drums out of Long Island wine barrels. Their performance is an exciting blend of martial arts, folk dance and drumming. Throughout the year, Ryu Shu Taiko performs at local schools and at various Long Island events, as well as throughout the Northeast. Tickets for the event cost $10 each for adults, and $5 each for children and students who present a student ID. They may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Brookhaven Employees Recreation Association Sales Office on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call (631) 344-7988. The centerpiece will be “Reflections, Remembrance and Renewal, A Celebration of our Resiliency in Commemoration of 9/11.” It will feature the finest multi-cultural performers in Queens volunteering their talents in a live, marathon celebration for the future. Reflections, Remembrance and Renewal will take place at three library locations simultaneously.
